Leeds has a busy vegan scene centred on the city centre and the student areas of Headingley and Hyde Park, and Kirkgate Market, one of the largest covered markets in Europe, has plant-based stalls among the traditional ones. Sheffield's independent cafés around Division Street and Kelham Island are reliably vegan-friendly, York has a growing list of vegan places inside the walls, and Hebden Bridge, in the Calder Valley, has long been one of the easiest small towns in the north to be vegan in.

Date ideas in Yorkshire

Few areas offer as much for an outdoors date. Walk a stretch of the Yorkshire Dales or the North York Moors, climb up to the edges above Sheffield in the Peak District, or take the train to York and walk the city walls. Distance in a big county

Yorkshire is the biggest county in England, and Scarborough is a long way from Sheffield. Set a distance you are happy to travel; the trains between Leeds, York and Sheffield are quick, so a range that takes in two of them is often worth it.

Culture on a budget

Leeds Art Gallery and the Royal Armouries are both free, and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, between Leeds and Sheffield near Wakefield, is free to walk round, with sculpture set across hundreds of acres of parkland. It makes a relaxed second date: plenty to look at, plenty of room to talk, and a café at the end.

Market towns and the coast

Beyond the cities, our Yorkshire members live in Harrogate, Ripon, Skipton, Halifax, Huddersfield, Doncaster and Rotherham, and along the coast at Whitby and Scarborough.
